Help Your Chronic Pain Patients Get the Relief That’s Been Eluding Them
Regardless of your specialty, you see patients with pain—chronic, intractable, unrelenting. In fact, chronic pain is estimated to affect one in five U.S. adults30, and there remain no treatments that consistently and permanently alleviate pain for all1,2. The result, unfortunately, is millions of Americans suffering from chronic pain despite all efforts, many becoming victims of the opioid painkiller crisis. Yet, scientific evidence from the study of pain treatment shows that a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach leads to better outcomes—and that it’s essential to consider the biological, psychological, and social factors involved in pain5,6.
Ensure your pain patients are receiving the modern standard of care.
Indeed, the State of Florida has effectively made this type of approach a legal obligation for providers treating pain, specifying that providers get special training and inform patients about psychosocial therapies as well as complementary and standard biological therapies. Treatment based on a biopsychosocial model of care has also been a key part of the United States National Pain Strategy since HHS first announced it in 2016. In addition, studies have shown that:
- Pain is an experience maintained by an interdependent relationship of biological, psychological, and social factors1, a relationship that changes and must be considered and reconsidered1,2.
- Interdisciplinary care based on the BPS model is the most clinically effective and cost-effective approach to use for patients with chronic pain3.
- Comprehensive interdisciplinary programs are most appropriate for patients who have complex pain problems not well controlled by monotherapies alone3.
- Compared to monotherapies (or no treatment), interdisciplinary treatment for pain provided greater improvement in a variety of measures, including a return to work, pain reduction, medication reduction, and increases in activity4.
- Compared to standard pain treatment, interdisciplinary pain treatment provided better pain reduction, decreased use of pain medications, and less pain and disability at 1-year follow-up5.
- Psychological approaches are effective in treating cancer6, post-op pain, non-cardiac chest pain, fibromyalgia syndrome, and chronic back pain7.
- Chronic low back pain patients in interdisciplinary pain programs do better than those who just have physical therapy8.
The comprehensive, interdisciplinary care patients need, per your preference.
At BPS Medical, we follow the State of Florida’s mandate, the national strategy, and the scientific evidence in order to help you provide your pain patients with the most effective care and best quality of life. Just how we help you do that depends on your needs and the needs of your patients.
Our interdisciplinary team of providers can work with you in whatever way will be most helpful and beneficial. Some practitioners ask us to take over certain patients for whom treatment has been challenging or ineffective. In some cases, a physician refers to BPS Medical just for the psychological and/or social components of care that are not part of their own core competencies. In other cases, we provide complementary therapies that referring physicians may not offer.
Get patients in quickly and receive reports quickly.
In all cases, BPS Medical remains dedicated to your patient’s needs and your goals as their healthcare provider. Our practitioners work cooperatively with one another and with you, offering:
- Stat appointments
- Easy referral options, including via phone, fax, email, or paper
- Patient engagement reports faxed to you within 24 hours
Meet the standard and restore patients to their best life.
As medical professionals, we can no longer ignore the complexities of the pain experience. Pain that is moderate to severe now requires a biopsychosocial model of comprehensive treatment.
